Torre Giralda

Torre Giralda, located in the Andalusian city of Seville, Spain, is an iconic Moorish tower that was originally constructed as part of a large mosque. The building process began under the Almohad dynasty between 1184 and 1198 AD. The slender building topped by a four-sided spire dominates the city’s skyline and stretches 97 meters (319 feet) high, making it one of the tallest medieval structures still standing today.

Its uniqueness lies in its rectangular base made up of four stacked sections divided with balconies from which the faithful would hear the Azan or prayer calls from minarets during Ramadan. A bell tower was added at the top in 1568 following its conversion to a Roman Catholic church though it continues to symbolize illustrious Moorish engineering practices.

Today, Torre Giralda stands as a significant landmark recognized for its beauty and historical significance and serves as an open-air museum where visitors can explore Islamic and Christian architectural styles while gaining an insight into the rich history of this majestic structure.

One of Seville's most well-known sights, the famed Giralda is undoubtedly worth a visit. Interestingly, the tower has 35 ramps that were erected so that riders on horses could access the summit. Visitors can access the summit using these ramps, which are still in use today, instead of the building's many stairs.

When you reach the summit, you'll be able to see the entire city from above and take in its numerous landmarks and lovely, winding streets. The Cathedral, the Giralda, and the Alcázar are frequently visited at the same time by tourists. We provide a guided tour that covers admission to all three locations if you're interested in doing the same.
