Institut & Musee Lumiere

By creating the Cinematograph in 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière established Lyon as the birthplace of the Seventh Art. 

The Lumière museum, which is housed in the family villa, allows you to learn about the Lumière brothers' amazing inventions, including the cinematograph and the first colour photos. The City of Lyon's collection of vintage cameras, which it purchased in 2003, includes important technological works for cooks.

The museum was established specifically to recognise their contributions to the cinema industry. The Lumière family's home serves as the museum's home. The Autochrome, the so-called Blue Label photographic plate, the Cinematograph, which projected their first films, the Photorama, the 3D and 75mm projection, and the Photostereosynthesis are just a few of the inventions the two brothers are known for. Visitors can watch the restored Lumière movies in a permanent projection area on the first level.
