Lyon Cathedral, or Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, is the seat of the Archbishop of Lyon and is known for its spectacular architecture. It was constructed on the ruins of a former 6th-century church that stood on the same spot. It was built between 1180 and 1476.

Because of its spectacular architecture, indoor Romanesque design, and the annual Festival of Lights, hosted here every December with stunning coordinated lighting displays, it is now an excellent destination for both Catholics and secular visitors. It is located in the center of Vieux Lyon, Lyon's historic district.

The nave and façade are excellent specimens of medieval Gothic architecture, while the internal apse and choir are designed in Romanesque style. The two medieval crosses on either side of the altar were erected in 1274, during the Second Council of Lyon. The Bourbon Chapel is regarded as a 15th-century sculpture masterpiece.

The cathedral also houses the famous Lyon Astronomical Clock, which dates from the 14th century. It is 9 meters tall and shows the moon, earth, sun, and stars' positions. It also has various automated figurines, including an hourglass, a dove, angels, and the Virgin Mary.

While the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a popular tourist attraction in Lyon, it is also a working Catholic Church and the seat of the Archbishop of Lyon. This indicates that it is a significant spiritual location, and visitors are asked to be polite and quiet, as well as to avoid visiting during Mass. Guided tours are available in a variety of languages, including English.

The Café de la Cathédrale serves drinks and nibbles just adjacent to the church. The archaeological garden, which is bordering on the northern side, contains ruins dating from the fourth to sixth centuries. Keep in mind that the neighborhood might become congested on weekends and in the afternoons.
