A distinctive art gallery with a distinctive name is the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. While 'Glyptotek' is derived from the Greek words 'glypto' from the root glyphein, which means 'to carve,' and 'theke,' which means 'storage place,' 'Ny' in Danish means 'new.'

Carl Jacobsen, the son of the company that founded Carlsberg Breweries, donated his collection to the museum.

Things to do at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek:

  • A truly one-of-a-kind space that honors both art and the areas in which it is displayed:

Once inside, you'll find a stunning structure with towering ceilings and an impressive winter garden centerpiece with palm trees encircling a fountain and pond. The museum spans antiquities from antiquity to the nineteenth century and is dispersed across various opulent residences.

Four buildings, constructed separately between 1897 and 2006, make up the museum's unique design.

  • Ancient and contemporary collections are displayed in the gallery:

A lovely journey through 3500 years of art and history can be had by visiting the Department of Antiquities, which has outstanding collections of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman works of art. You may picture yourself in Ancient Greece, Egypt, or Rome as you stroll through the marble-lined passageways.

The Modern Department concentrates on French and Danish art from the 19th and 20th centuries and Danish painting and sculpture from those eras. Experience French Impressionism, enjoy artwork from Denmark's magnificent Golden Age, and see more than 40 pieces by Gauguin (out on loan until spring 2020). Additionally, 35 sculptures by Rodin and the entire collection of Degas' bronzes are on display.

  • The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek frequently hosts special exhibitions that are integrated within the museum visit:

The temporary special exhibitions, via loaned pieces, offer a different viewpoint on the collection. After business hours, Glyptoteket is alive with cultural events and performances like the Danish Boys' Choir. There is a tiny bookshop and gift shop inside the gallery.

  • Unwind at the café with a view of the lovely and roomy Winter Garden:

Experience a stunning view over Copenhagen and the city towers by visiting Glyptotek's roof terrace. You also ahve the option of relaxing at Café Picnic. It is situated in the lovely and roomy Winter Garden, and offers delicious light lunches, desserts, coffee, and other drinks. Here, you can unwind with a piece of cake, a light lunch, or perhaps just a cup of coffee in the tranquil atmosphere.
