The majestic Panathenaic Stadium is a brilliant light of modern Athens and remains one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Following various alterations during its lengthy history, it eventually became the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and it remains the world's only stadium built completely of marble.

Locals began calling the venue Kallimarmaro, made of beautiful marble, during the twentieth century and continue to do so now. The term stadium is derived from the ancient Greek term for length, stadion, which was around 185 meters long and was comparable to the length of the track.

Morning joggers are welcome from 7.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Download and complete the waiver form from the official website. If you merely want to see the view from the highest point of the stadium, there's an entry to the surrounding park from Arhimidous. The venue is still used for important sports, cultural, and ceremonial events. During an Olympic Games year, the Olympic flame travels from Olympia to Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium for an authorized hand-over event to the host nation.

The stadium also serves as the finish line for the annual Authentic Athens Marathon, which runs from Marathon to Athens every November. In the summer, the stadium stages frequent performances, which are not to be missed if you happen to be in town at the time.

With its serried rows of white Pentelic marble seats carved into a ravine close to Ardettos Hill, this old stadium appeals to both classical architecture buffs and sports fans who can picture the clamor of millennia-old spectators. A ticket includes an audio tour, entry to a small display about the modern Olympics, mostly eye-candy game posters, and the opportunity to pose for a photo on a winner's pedestal.
