Duomo di Sant'Andrea is a cathedral at Amalfi, combines several architectural elements and is a physical representation of the town's former status as a maritime superpower in the 11th century.

The early 13th century was when the cathedral was partially built. The most recent reconstruction of its striped facade was at the end of the 19th century. It was built next to the Basilica del Crocifisso, an ancient cathedral with which it has long been affiliated. Now a museum, the basilica is still standing.

The cathedral was initially constructed to hold St. Andrew the Apostle's relics, which were brought to the cathedral from Constantinople in 1208.

The cathedral is only accessible from the nearby Chiostro del Paradiso museum between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm. You can visit the cathedral for free at other times.

How to explore Duomo di Sant'Andrea?

  • The structure has a mixed style. On the exterior, the Sicilian Arabic-Norman design is predominant, especially in the two-tone masonry, mosaics, and bell tower from the 13th century. It is impressive when viewed from the top of the arching 62-step stairway.
  • The enormous bronze doors, the first of their kind in Italy, were fashioned in Syria upon the order of a local lord and transported to Amalfi.
  • The interior is mostly baroque, with some lovely statues near the altar and intriguing mosaics from the 12th and 13th centuries.
  • In the sacred space, a wooden Crucifix from the thirteenth century hangs. To the right of the back door is another mother-of-pearl crucifix that was imported from the Holy Land.
  • The sarcophagus of Archbishop Pietro Capuano served as the foundation for the High Altar in the central nave. The Martyrdom of St. Andrew is depicted in a painting by Andrea dell'Asta that hangs above the altar.
  • The Flagellation, the Crucifixion of the Apostle, and Dell'Asta Miracle of the Manna, all from 1710, are depicted on the boxed ceiling, which was constructed in 1702.
  • Two columns made of granite imported from Egypt support the triumphal arch. The 12th-century ambo included two more twisted columns and two pulpits. A hidden column on one of the pillars serves as an illustration of an old Romanesque building.
